In computer networking and computer science, digital bandwidth, network bandwidth or just bandwidth is a measure of available or consumed data communication resources expressed in bit/s or multiples of it. Bandwidth may refer to bandwidth capacity or available bandwidth in bit/s, which typically means the net bit rate, channel capacity or the maximum throughput of a logical or physical communication path in a digital communication system. For example, bandwidth test implies measuring the maximum throughput of a computer network. The reason for this usage is that according to Hartleys law, the maximum data rate of a physical communication link is proportional to its bandwidth in hertz, which is sometimes called frequency bandwidth, radio bandwidth or analog bandwidth, the last especially in computer networking literature. High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles A bandwidth cap, also known as a bit cap, limits the transfer of a specified amount of data over a period of time. Internet service providers commonly apply a cap when a channel intended to be shared by many users becomes overloaded, or may be overloaded, by a few users. Implementation of a bandwidth cap is sometimes termed a Fair Access Policy. Many ISPs engineered their facilities in the 1990s to use dynamic capacity allocation to serve multiple bursty users. Each user is expected to use high speed transmission for only a short time, for example to download a megabyte web page in less than a second. Bandwidth is typically measured in hertz, and may sometimes refer to passband bandwidth, sometimes to baseband bandwidth, depending on context. Passband bandwidth is the difference between the upper and lower cutoff frequencies of, for example, an electronic filter, a communication channel, or a signal spectrum. In case of a lowpass filter or baseband signal, the bandwidth is equal to its upper cutoff frequency. The term baseband bandwidth refers to the upper cutoff frequency. Bandwidth in hertz is a central concept in many fields, including electronics, information theory, radio communications, signal processing, and spectroscopy. In computer networking and other digital fields, the term bandwidth often refers to a data rate measured in bits per second, for example network throughput. The reason is that according to Hartleys law, the digital data rate limit of a physical communication link is related to its bandwidth in hertz, sometimes denoted frequency bandwidth, analog bandwidth or radio bandwidth. For bandwidth as a computing term, less ambiguous terms are bit rate, throughput, maximum throughput, goodput or channel capacity. Available Bandwidth Estimation

Available Bandwidth Estimation

$130.64

The estimation of the available bandwidth in a network endtoend path can be used to improve the performance of several network applications: network management, traffic engineering, flow and congestion control, routing protocols, admission control, among others. Current estimation tools use either the probe gap model or the probe rate model sampling techniques. In this work, bandwidth estimation tools and techniques are studied and a hidden Markov model (HMM) approach is investigated to incorporate the dynamics of the available bandwidth. The model is used by a proposed estimator that samples the network and generates estimations adjusted by the HMM. This adjustment makes it possible to obtain acceptable estimation accuracy with a small number of samples and in a short period of time. The estimation called Traceband is fast, accurate and introduces low probing traffic to the network. A moving average technique can be implemented to smooth out the estimations and improves Tracebands accuracy even further. A Bandwidth Market in an Packet Switching Network

A Bandwidth Market in an Packet Switching Network

This project considers a connectionoriented telecommunication network where calls arrive to routes in a Poisson process and the call lengths are exponentially distributed. Each accepted call generates packets which arrive to routes in a Poisson process and the packet lengths are exponentially distributed. Each accepted call generates an amount of revenue for the route manager. At specified time points a manager can buy additional bandwidth in order to carry more calls and earn more revenue. Alternatively, a manager can earn additional revenue by selling surplus bandwidth. We presented a buffer management scheme where at specified time points a manager can buy additional bandwidth or buffer space to carry more calls or queue more packets and earn more revenue; alternatively a manager can earn revenue by selling surplus bandwidth or buffer space to other route managers. The combined call and packet management schemes use local rules to optimally adjust the bandwidth and buffer space allocated to the paths. Initial experiments show that the reallocation scheme achieves good performance.. Infinite Bandwidth: Encountering Christ in the Media

Infinite Bandwidth: Encountering Christ in the Media

$9.29

Franciscan University of Steubenville Professor Eugene Gan authors this first-of-its-kind Catholic roadmap for the digital age: Infinite Bandwidth: Encountering Christ in the Media. He navigates you faithfully through the digital world encouraging frustrated parents not to throw out cell phones ban the Internet chuck computers or pitch portable media devices. That would be a mistake andbelieve it or notwould be going against more than seven decades of Catholic teaching. From Church documents on social communications Gan extracts seven principles or media keys of how to approach and use media. The Churchand Gansay that we must enter into the modern day Areopagus the social and intellectual hub of ancient Athens where Paul preached to pagans and use the media tools God has given us to make truth known and serve mankind. Cardinal John Patrick Foley says Frankly I wish that such a book had existed when I was president of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications as a text which I could have recommended. The important thing however is that it exists now to provide a text context and challenge for those who wish to bring both Christian principles and professional excellence to their work in the media. Gan offers chapter after chapter of real-life experience of how to assess movies games and gadgets for you and your teens. Of how to judge the merits of a film like Saving Private Ryan and what sets it apart from Nightmare on Elm Street. Can the one be acceptable viewing and the other not? Definitely. And Gan details why. Infinite Bandwidth: Encountering Christ in the Media is way out front of the newest gizmoand will stay therethanks to its timeless principles that can be applied in all digital terrain now and the future. Parents educators and students will put this book down with an entirely different attitude about the relationship between faith and media use.

Telecosm: How Infinite Bandwidth Will Revolutionize Our World

Telecosm: How Infinite Bandwidth Will Revolutionize Our World

$5.49

The computer age is over. After a cataclysmic global run of thirty years, it has given birth to the age of the telecosm -- the world enabled and defined by new communications technology. Chips and software will continue to make great contributions to our lives, but the action is elsewhere. To seek the key to great wealth and to understand the bewildering ways that high tech is restructuring our lives, look not to chip speed but to communication power, or bandwidth. Bandwidth is exploding, and its abundance is the most important social and economic fact of our time. George Gilder is one of the great technological visionaries, and "the man who put the 's' in 'telecosm'" (Telephony magazine). He is equally famous for understanding and predicting the nuts and bolts of complex technologies, and for putting it all together in a soaring view of why things change, and what it means for our daily lives. His track record of futurist predictions is one of the best, often proving to be right even when initially opposed by mighty corporations and governments. He foresaw the power of fiber and wireless optics, the decline of the telephone regime, and the explosion of handheld computers, among many trends. His list of favored companies outpaced even the soaring Nasdaq in 1999 by more than double. His long-awaited Telecosm is a bible of the new age of communications. Equal parts science story, business history, social analysis, and prediction, it is the one book you need to make sense of the titanic changes underway in our lives. Whether you surf the net constantly or not at all, whether you live on your cell phone or hate it for its invasion of private life, you need this book. It has been less than two decades since the introduction of the IBM personal computer, and yet the enormous changes wrought in our lives by the computer will pale beside the changes of the telecosm. Gilder explains why computers will "empty out," with their components migrating to the net; why hundreds of low-flying satellites will enable hand-held computers and communicators to become ubiquitous; why television will die; why newspapers and magazines will revive; why advertising will become less obnoxious; and why companies will never be able to waste your time again. Along the way you will meet the movers and shakers who have made the telecosm possible. From Charles Townes and Gordon Gould, who invented the laser, to the story of JDS Uniphase, "the Intel of the Telecosm," to the birthing of fiberless optics pioneer TeraBeam, here are the inventors and entrepreneurs who will be hailed as the next Edison or Gates. From hardware to software to chips to storage, here are the technologies that will soon be as basic as the air we breathe.
