Period Mappings and Period Domains

Period Mappings and Period Domains

$157.09

The concept of a period of an elliptic integral goes back to the 18th century. Later Abel, Gauss, Jacobi, Legendre, Weierstrass and others made a systematic study of these integrals. Rephrased in modern terminology, these give a way to encode how the complex structure of a two-torus varies, thereby showing that certain families contain all elliptic curves. Generalizing to higher dimensions resulted in the formulation of the celebrated Hodge conjecture, and in an attempt to solve this, Griffiths generalized the classical notion of period matrix and introduced period maps and period domains which reflect how the complex structure for higher dimensional varieties varies. The basic theory as developed by Griffiths is explained in the first part of the book. Then, in the second part spectral sequences and Koszul complexes are introduced and are used to derive results about cycles on higher dimensional algebraic varieties such as the Noether-Lefschetz theorem and Nori's theorem. Finally, in the third part differential geometric methods are explained leading up to proofs of Arakelov-type theorems, the theorem of the fixed part, the rigidity theorem, and more. Higgs bundles and relations to harmonic maps are discussed, and this leads to striking results such as the fact that compact quotients of certain period domains can never admit a Kahler metric or that certain lattices in classical Lie groups can't occur as the fundamental group of a Kahler manifold.

Integrity in the Public and Private Domains

Integrity in the Public and Private Domains

$270.84

Integrity in the Private and Public Domains explores the issue of public and private integrity in politics, the media, health, science, fundraising, the economy and the public sector. Over twenty essays by wellknown figures such as Amelie Rorty, David Vines, the late Hugo Gryn, Alan Montefiore and Hilary Lawson present a compelling insight into debates over integrity today. A key chapter of the book concerns the highly publicised donation to Oxford University by GertRudolf Flick, an issue which attracted wide media attention by raising questions of fundraising and the holocaust. Author: Montefiore, A./ Montefiore, Alan/ Vines, David Binding Type: Hardcover Number of Pages: 356 Publication Date: 1999/03/16 Language: English Dimensions: 9.74 x 6.38 x 1.25 inches

NavierStokes Equations in Irregular Domains

NavierStokes Equations in Irregular Domains

$301.11

The analytical basis of NavierStokes Equations in Irregular Domains is formed by coercive estimates, which enable proofs to be given of the solvability of the boundary value problems for Stokes and NavierStokes equations in weighted Sobolev and H lder spaces, and the investigation of the smoothness of their solutions. This allows one to deal with the special problems that arise in the presence of edges or angular points in the plane case, at the boundary or noncompact boundaries. Such problems cannot be dealt with in any of the usual ways. Audience: Graduate students, research mathematicians and hydromechanicians whose work involves functional analysis and its applications to NavierStokes equations. Author: Stupelis, L. Series Title: Developments in Hydrobiology Series Number: 326 Binding Type: Hardcover Number of Pages: 584 Publication Date: 1995/06/30 Language: English Dimensions: 6.14 x 9.21 x 1.31 inches

Molecular Characterization of Arid and DDT Domains.

Molecular Characterization of Arid and DDT Domains.

Transcriptional regulation of genes is vital to cell success making it an important aspect of research. Transcriptional regulation can occur in many ways; transcription factors bind to the promoter region and block transcription, disrupt an activator protein, or interact with histones to lead to higher order chromatin. Plant HomeoDomain can recognize and bind to different methylation states of histone tails. PHD proteins use other functional regions to carry out functions. Two associated domains having DNAbinding capacity were characterized in this study; the ARID domains of JARID1A and JARID1C and the DDT domains of BAZ1A, BAZ1B and BAZ2A. These genes are important because of their roles in various diseases such as cancer. The consensus sequences for BAZ1ADDT is GGACGGRnnGG, GnGAGRGCRnnGGnG, RAGGGGGRnG and CRYCGGT. Consensus sequences for BAZ1BDDT were CGnCCAnCTTnTGGG and YGCCCCTCCCCnR. Consensus sequences for BAZ2ADDT were TACnnAGCnY and CnnCCRGCnRTGnYY. Consensus sequence for JARID1AARID was GnYnGCGYRCYnCnG. Consensus sequences for JARID1CARID was RGGRGCCRGGY. Defective Domains in Second Language Syntax

Defective Domains in Second Language Syntax

$103.56

This book looks at the question of what second language learners know about syntax but could not have learned, by investigating two defective sentential domains, namely Clausal Gerunds and TPdefective Gerunds. It is intended to offer an evidence for the biological study of human language, i.e. biolinguistics from the field of Second Language Acquisition by showing that even in the process of L2 acquisition there exist certain areas of syntactic knowledge that could not have been learned. In the final chapter, a sketch of a biolinguistic theory of second language acquisition is offered by the author. The Geometry of Complex Domains

The Geometry of Complex Domains

$92.44

One of the satisfying aspects of the modern theory of automorphism groups is that it applies tools of differential geometry, partial differential equations, Lie groups, and complex function theory to develop profound new insights, for example, with respect to dynamical systems. This highly original work presents a comprehensive treatment of automorphism group theory in a rich tapestry of themes and concepts. The authors trace the evolution of the classical theory to the modern theory, which is today a cornerstone of geometric analysis, integrating a historical overview with a survey of the most recent work in the field.

Domains and Lambda-Calculi

Domains and Lambda-Calculi

$181.39

This book describes the mathematical aspects of the semantics of programming languages. The main goals are to provide formal tools to assess the meaning of programming constructs in both a language-independent and a machine-independent way and to prove properties about programs, such as whether they terminate, or whether their result is a solution of the problem they are supposed to solve. In order to achieve this the authors first present, in an elementary and unified way, the theory of certain topological spaces that have proved of use in the modeling of various families of typed lambda calculi considered as core programming languages and as meta-languages for denotational semantics. This theory is now known as Domain Theory, and was founded as a subject by Scott and Plotkin. One of the main concerns is to establish links between mathematical structures and more syntactic approaches to semantics, often referred to as operational semantics, which is also described. This dual approach has the double advantage of motivating computer scientists to do some mathematics and of interesting mathematicians in unfamiliar application areas from computer science.
